Greenfield Farms Open Pollinated Seed Corn
Growers of Open Pollinated Seed Corn since 1970
We have been raising Reid’s Yellow Dent and other varieties of open pollinated seed corn for the past thirty- eight years. During that time we have sold seed in more than forty states. This year we are selling three different varieties. This past season my neighbors planted more corn than usual, consequently leaving me fewer places to plant four varieties. Therefore, the Reid’s and Krug were planted in the same planter at the same time. This leaves a Krug/Reid’s cross as one kind.
Buyers can raise their own seed from their initial purchase of any one of the varieties. Yields are comparable to the hybrids if similar amounts of fertilizer are applied and cultural practices the same. The protein and rare elements are higher than those found in most hybrids. The corn from the cob tested 11.1% protein. We have had reports of silage testing as high as 16% protein with a silage preservative added. The leaves and the stock add the extra protein to the silage.
Some of our regular customers have bought seed for silage for eighteen to twenty-five consecutive years. This past season the open pollinated corn was 16.5% moisture at harvest while the moisture content of neighboring hybrids are usually higher.
Krug/Reid’s Cross A 100 day corn.
A cross between Reid’s Yellow Dent, the most popular open pollinated, yellow variety grown in the entire country and Krug, a variety similar to Reid’s. Cobs tend to be small and dark red, 9 to 10 inches long with mostly 16 closely spaced rows of kernels. Stalks are heavy, tall, and leafy and make excellent silage. It does equally well for grain production.
Greenfield 114 A 114 day corn.
We have developed this seed in the last few years. We really don’t know where it came from. However, it is an open pollinated corn that breeds true with excellent standability and the ears are quite uniform in height on the stalks. The Amish prefer this corn because the corn makes nice bundles from their corn binders. A very good yielder with reports as high as 190 bushels to the acre.
Blue Corn Approximately an 80-85 day corn.
This is a good multi-purpose corn useful for roasting ears, livestock feed, and fall decorating. It is high in protein and this year yielded nearly as well as our other corn. We will sell this corn for $2.00 per pound plus postage in 5 to 25 pound lots or a full bushel of 56 pounds for $56.00 plus postage. The blue corn will not be graded for size.

A word of caution:
Plant populations on any open pollinated corn should not exceed 18,000 to 19,000. Our planter is sent at 18,000. For silage you could plant 22,000 to 23,000 for extra tonnage.
